The Real Moors: The Black Africans Who Brought the Renaissance to Western Europe
After centuries of deception and whitewash, the term, "Moor" has been made synonymous with "Arab" or "Muslim." A simple way of determining who the Moors really were is to first examine the origins of the word, "Moor." Originally from the Greek word, "maurus," it means "blackened" or "charred." From "maurus" we get "Mauretania" the Greek word for the entire continent of Africa--not just
sub-Saharan Africa. From this word, we get modern-day Mauritania, where medieval western Europeans believed to be home to great West African Moorish civilization.
That's right, "Moor" has always been synonymous with "Black African" until recent decades. For evidence, one need only examine the people who named Africans, "Moors"--the Western Europeans. There you'll find countless
depictions of Moors as unmistakably Black Africans. See "Western Europe's Fascination with the Moors" for more information.
For our purposes, Moorish civilization will be defined as the Black civilization of Western Africa in present-day Mauritania, Morocco (which is also derived from the word, "Moor"), Mali, and Spain. From this empire came huge castles, colonization in Europe, exploration to the Americas, and high technology.
Centuries before great structures existed in places like France and Germany, the Moors had built huge castles throughout the Sahara and Southern Spain:
